The story behind
Crossing Boundaries

Why did I choose to write Crossing Boundaries? I was driven by a strong desire to challenge the mould that has kept the role of the principal stagnant, under appreciated and misunderstood. This book is my response — a compelling call to revitalise and rethink what it means to be an educational leader today. Additionally, this work draws on my doctoral research, conducted in 2020 at Stellenbosch University, which explored the lived experiences of primary school principals in their instructional leadership roles in daily practice. The study indicates that the participating principals have limited experience in their instructional leadership roles because they lack effective practices to enhance teaching and learning. They also tend to delegate most of their instructional leadership responsibilities to senior staff members.

These principals should become more actively involved in their core role, which is to enhance teaching and learning. Moreover, they should continually seek their own professional development, as well as that of their staff, to acquire knowledge and skills that can strengthen their instructional practices. Furthermore, research from 2023 by the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) indicates that many principals in the USA lack sufficient training to interpret policies and align their schools with reform initiatives. Why promote a narrative or storybook on instructional leadership? Research from MDPI and ResearchGate since 2023 reveals that no fictional book has been identified that specifically addresses the challenges of instructional leadership for primary school principals in both the USA and South Africa. These findings strengthen the case for writing Crossing Boundaries, suggesting it could be the first storybook on instructional leadership in both countries. Crossing Boundaries demonstrates that true leadership is not just about holding a position of authority but about fostering an environment where teachers and students can thrive. Additionally, this book is more than just a collection of stories — it is an invitation to foster transformation towards educational excellence.

As you explore, you'll encounter a vibrant landscape where stories of Emma Rivers, Thabo Mokoena and many others intersect. Emma’s inspiring journey through an urban school highlights the powerful influence principals can have in empowering teachers. Thabo's unwavering dedication to his rural school exemplifies resilience and hope in the face of adversity. What you will read is not just a comparison of two distant educational worlds but also the shared heartbeat of human relationships that transcend time and space.

Each page is packed with strategies, discussions and thought-provoking questions, shared in a personal, anecdotal style that feels more like chatting with a friend than reading a textbook. Whether you are a current principal or aspiring to become one, I guarantee you will find something that resonates. I encourage school leaders to try out the strategies shared in the book and implement them within their own context (whether rural or urban), observing how they inspire transformation within themselves and their communities.

Yours in unity and leadership,

Dr. Jeremy Mark Van Wyk
